Pottery O’Clock

Why Clocks?

Someone recently asked me: why clocks? I’m not sure there’s a real reason, but I like to believe it has something to do with a childhood memory. At my grandparents’ house, there was a very old, faulty table clock that would sometimes start working again for a minute or two whenever I picked it up gently in my hands. Of course, I was rarely allowed to touch it. That’s perhaps what made it so precious to me.

Either way, the idea of making a clock didn’t take long to surface once I learned the hard slab technique. This method involves cutting shapes out of a flattened slab of clay (a bit like a pie crust), after letting it firm up. The pieces are then assembled to create the desired form.

Clocks quickly became my favorite subject. As a part time potter, the time I can devote to my passion is limited. I always find myself looking forward to the moment pottery time finally arrives, a quiet, creative moment I welcome with joy.
