I make a lot of vases, but I actually keep very few for myself. I’ve decided to keep a few for my own home, and I’ve discovered a new challenge: finding the right stems to go with them.
I thought this would be the easy part.
I buy a few dried flowers and grasses, try them out… and discover that a stem can look beautiful on its own and not work with a vase at all.
Too tall, too bold, too straight. Or almost perfect, if I just shorten it a little.
So I cut.
I look.
I cut again.
Just one more centimetre…
And there we go. Too short.
The problem with dried stems is that they don’t grow back. Unlike my hair, which is also much too short at the moment. Clearly, one should be wary of very sharp scissors.
Fortunately, I’ve found a solution for all those sacrificed stems: I’ll simply have to keep a few smaller vases.
And buy new stems for the tall ones.
Which I’ll probably have to cut.
I have a feeling this story isn’t over.
